Every child deserves quality education. This program worked to ensure vulnerable children in Sofala Province, Mozambique — including those with disabilities — access inclusive, quality primary education. In partnership with Light for the World.
In rural Mozambique, too many children remain outside the education system — especially children with disabilities, girls in vulnerable households, and children from remote communities. This program set out to change that in Sofala Province.
Between September 2022 and December 2023, ASADEC partnered with Light for the World — a leading international disability and inclusion organization — to implement inclusive education interventions that removed barriers and brought vulnerable children into the classroom.
The program worked simultaneously on three fronts: identifying out-of-school children in the community, training teachers in inclusive pedagogy, and mobilizing families and school authorities around the right to education for every child.
When children with disabilities and vulnerabilities access education, entire communities transform.
In Mozambique, children with disabilities are 3x more likely to be out of school than their peers. In rural Sofala, physical barriers, stigma, and lack of trained teachers compound the challenge.
Inclusion doesn't happen in the classroom alone. It requires families, teachers, school directors, and community leaders working together to remove barriers and welcome every child.
Mozambique's Constitution and international commitments guarantee the right to education for every child. Our program worked to turn that legal right into daily reality in Sofala's schools.

Systematically identify children — especially those with disabilities and vulnerabilities — currently outside the education system in target Sofala communities.
Build teacher capacity in inclusive pedagogy, differentiated learning, and disability-friendly teaching methods that welcome every child in the classroom.
Work with parents and guardians to overcome stigma, understand educational rights, and actively support their children's access to school.
Partner with school directors, councils, and district education authorities to make inclusion structural — not one-off charity.
Support accessibility improvements where possible, and work to reduce social barriers, stigma, and discrimination that keep children out.
Feed practical experience into Mozambique's national dialogue on inclusive education — strengthening policy implementation frameworks.
